WASHINGTON—ASAE is seeking association professionals and industry partners to fill open positions on the ASAE and the ASAE Foundation Board of Directors to help lead the association dedicated to furthering the profession of association management. In this annual call for nominations, there are six open positions: Secretary-Treasurer and five At Large Directors (four At Large and one Industry Partner). All directors selected will serve on the ASAE Board and two of the four selected will also serve on the ASAE Foundation Board.

ASAE Foundation Reveals Four Winners of Innovation Grant Program

ASAE Collaborates with Obama Administration on New Conference Guidance for Agencies

WASHINGTON—After meeting with ASAE in March, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) this week provided federal agencies with additional guidance on travel and conferences. ASAE worked with other associations to draft a protocol for conference planners to use in putting together meetings attended by federal employees. OMB adopted many of the protocol’s suggested best practices, such as hotel costs that are within government per diem rates and ensuring that social events held in conjunction with a conference aren’t lavish or excessive.

ASAE Debuts New Diversity + Inclusion Benchmarking Tool for Association Management

WASHINGTON—Today, ASAE is introducing the first Diversity + Inclusion (D+I) tool for associations called the Association Inclusion Index. It’s an online, diagnostic tool that evaluates D+I policies, philosophies, and practices against community standards. The tool offers strategies and solutions for expanding an organization’s reach, relevance and reputation through practicing inclusive excellence. WASHINGTON—ASAE's Key Global Associations Committee (KGAC), a group of US-based association leaders, recently traveled to Hong Kong and participated in a week-long learning and networking event, February 16-22. The group explored Hong Kong as a future destination for expanding the presence of US associations. The trip included an overview of Hong Kong as a business destination while also covering the rich cultural and historical background of the region.

New Report Released by Meeting Industry Leaders Outline Future of Trade Shows, How to Prepare for them

In its continuous effort to stay ahead of the curve, meeting industry leaders collaborated to fund a research project to predict as well as plan for the future of convention exhibits and trade shows. ASAE Foundation, Exhibition Industry Foundation, Freeman, Gaylord Entertainment, and PCMA Education commissioned a project to look at the trends and analyze trade shows from five hypothetical perspectives. Each provides insight into how to create more impact with exhibit space.

ASAE has recently launched a new site for professionals and volunteers to share ideas that benefit the performance of associations, nonprofits, community programs and civil service groups. The new site, 199Ideas.org, was created based on the book series 199 Ideas, published by ASAE’s Association Management Press, which features hundreds of ideas about various topics of association and nonprofit management.

The new immigration laws that have recently been passed in several U.S. states and under consideration in others continue to fuel a national debate over the specific provisions of the measure and whether comprehensive immigration reform is best addressed at the state or national level. ASAE is not taking a position on the laws. However, it is unfortunate that the meetings and tourism industry, associations and other organizations and the people who are a part of these communities may be negatively impacted by potential outcomes.

Senate Passes 1099 Repeal Bill

The Senate today voted to repeal the expanded 1099 reporting requirements that were unpopular with many associations and small businesses, sending the bill to the president’s desk for signature. ASAE and its grassroots supporters have been pushing strongly for repeal since last summer, and made the issue the top legislative concern for American Associations Day 2011, ASAE’s legislative fly-in held in Washington, DC last week.

Based on the discussion at the last Board meeting at the 2010 Volunteer Leadership Retreat in New Orleans, November 15-17, the ASAE Board heard recommendations on various ongoing projects. The agenda included a detailed update on the International initiative, volunteer structure and experience of ASAE’s 1,000-strong volunteer force, enhancements to ASAE’s Annual Meeting and Exposition, and a new designation for ASAE Fellows.

The Convention Industry Council today released a new study: The Economic Significance of Meetings to the U.S. Economy, revealing that the U.S. meetings industry directly supports 1.7 million jobs, a $106 billion contribution to GDP, $263 billion in spending, $60 billion in labor revenue, $14.3 billion in federal tax revenue and $11.3 billion in state and local tax revenue.

This year’s attendance has seen an increase in the number of association professionals by nearly 700, and exhibitors by nearly 100.

A discussion on ASAE’s program of work topped the agenda at the Board meeting Friday preceding ASAE’s 2010 Annual Meeting and Exposition, August 21-24, in Los Angeles. During the day-long meeting at the JW Marriott in downtown LA, the Board received a progress report on the organization’s initiatives in three segments: an overview of ASAE’s ongoing initiatives, a detailed summary of three ongoing programs with new growth opportunities—The Power of A, Greater Washington region and Digital Strategy—and a report on progress on an approach to serve the specific needs of four business segments, originally presented at the March Board meeting. The Board approved a program of work and related budget for Fiscal Year 2010 (FY11).

The new ASAE Foundation is quickly taking shape and will be ready to launch its work at ASAE’s 2010 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Los Angeles, August 21-24. At a joint meeting March 2010, the ASAE and The Center for Association Leadership Board approved the creation of the Foundation, along with a name change for the organization and expanded use of The Power of A (Associations) campaign. The organization’s name became ASAE, with a tag line “The Center for Association Leadership.” The Board’s decision to create a distinct 501(c)(3) foundation, separate from the ASAE 501(c)(6) organization but clearly linked, provides a substantive fundraising platform and message for the community.

ASAE Business Services’ Industry Partner, Capital Advisory Group (CapGroup), has recently been certified by CEFEX, the Centre for Fiduciary Excellence, LLC, a global assessment and certification organization providing comprehensive assessment programs to improve risk management for institutional and retail investors. CapGroup was found to be in conformance with the Fiduciary Practices for Investment Advisors, as defined in the Global Fiduciary Standard of Excellence (the “Standard”), which is the model for benchmarking investment stewardship and fiduciary conduct. ASAE Chairman Velma Hart yesterday was honored with the 2010 APEX Award for Distinguished Service. Presented by Black Meetings & Tourism magazine, the Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions, which have positively impacted travel and tourism. The Award was presented at the Travel Professionals of Color (TPOC) 8th Annual Conference, April 22. Hart is the first African American chairman of the ASAE Board.

Convention Industry Council Today Launched Research Effort to Measure the Economic significance of Meetings in the United States

The Convention Industry Council (CIC) today issued a comprehensive survey to meeting planners which will develop data necessary to determine the economic significance that meetings represent and to produce a basis for ongoing benchmarking and analysis of the meetings sector. The study is being conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the survey is being sent to planner members of CIC’s member organizations.

Following a two-day meeting in conjunction with the 2010 American Associations Day, ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership Boards today approved a name change for the organization. Based on a recommendation from a task force appointed by The Center Board, the organization’s name will become ASAE, with a tag line “The Center for Association Leadership.” In addition, the current 501(c)3 entity will become the ASAE Foundation, with a tag line “Advancing Association and Nonprofit Leadership,” to support the organization’s mission in the areas of research, leadership and innovation.

To the relief of the association and business communities, the House of Representatives passed legislation today maintaining the “established business relationship” exception that allows associations and companies to send unsolicited faxes to their members and clients. Following similar action by the Senate late last week, the bill (S. 714) is now ready for the president’s signature. President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law before Friday, July 1.

ASAE redesigned Associations Now this year and launched the new, responsive-design microsite to deliver news, blogs, and other daily content to association professionals.
