How We’re Elevating Trust Through Industry Self-Regulation at BBB National Programs

Drawing on proven success in the direct selling industry, a blueprint for trade associations to build credibility, reduce regulatory risk, and foster transparency in a new era of accountability is emerging.

When I reflect on my career trajectory and the evolving role of trade associations in today's landscape, one thing is clear: We are at a pivotal moment. ASAEForesightWorks shows that public trust in institutions is waning, and consumers are more informed — and more skeptical — than ever before. That’s why I believe so strongly in the power of proactive, independent industry self-regulation as a vehicle not just for compliance but for real, lasting impact.

My Journey: From DSA to BBB National Programs

Before joining BBB National Programs, I spent over two decades at the Direct Selling Association (DSA), most recently serving as vice president of membership. DSA members sell products person-to-person with a field salesforce of independent contractors. During that time, I had the privilege to be a part of the launch of one of the initiatives I’m most proud of: the Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council (DSSRC). We partnered with BBB National Programs in 2019 to address misleading earnings and product claims in the direct selling space — a growing concern that required thoughtful, industry-led oversight.

Fast-forward to today, and I’m now serving as vice president of national partners and business development at BBB National Programs. My focus is on expanding our network of national partners and developing new, robust self-regulation programs for associations across a wide range of industries. It’s a natural evolution of the work I began at DSA and an exciting opportunity to scale the impact we’ve already seen.

DSSRC: Proof That Self-Regulation Works

The success of DSSRC in just five years has been remarkable:

  • Over 7,000 misleading earnings claims removed
  • More than 2,500 egregious product claims eliminated
  • 29 referrals to the Federal Trade Commission for noncompliance

These aren’t just numbers — they represent a fundamental culture shift in the direct selling industry. They show that with the proper structure and independent enforcement, voluntary self-regulation isn’t just possible, it’s transformational. It restores credibility, builds transparency, and earns trust. DSSRC is an award-winning program. In 2021, the International Council of Advertising Self-Regulation awarded BBB National Programs its best sectoral initiative award, recognizing DSSRC for its success in promoting truth and transparency in the direct selling industry, including effective proactive monitoring of the marketplace.

Why Associations Should Lean Into Self-Regulation

At BBB National Programs, we offer more than a stamp of approval. We provide the infrastructure, legal expertise, and track record needed to implement self-regulation that works. With over 20 active industry self-regulation programs, including our flagship National Advertising Division (NAD), we help businesses and associations:

  • Establish and enforce clear, transparent standards
  • Reduce the risk of government enforcement
  • Build stronger relationships with both consumers and regulators
  • Promote fairness and accountability across their industries

Take NAD, for example. Over more than 50 years, it has removed thousands of misleading advertising claims and built the country’s largest body of advertising law decisions. That kind of precedent is invaluable in a time when digital platforms and consumer voices can amplify missteps in seconds.

A Blueprint for Association Leaders

BBB National Programs offers a playbook for other association leaders. If your industry is under scrutiny, struggling with public perception, or trying to separate responsible actors from bad ones, consider what BBB National Programs and self-regulation can offer.

With the right leadership and the support of an independent partner, self-regulation doesn’t just shield your industry from risk — it becomes a strategic advantage.

Final Thought: Lead the Change

Now is the time to reimagine the role of trade associations in shaping their industries. My journey has shown me that embracing industry self-regulation isn’t just about doing the right thing; it’s about doing the smart thing. When we lead with integrity, structure, and accountability, we elevate the reputation of our entire industry.

Let’s lead the change — together.
