Samuel Aubrey, MPA, RCE, chief executive officer of the Winston Salem Regional Association of Realtors, answers questions from member Ferrell Clay.

How do you address strategic long-range planning in this climate of constant change?

Fortunately, I work with a leadership team of practitioners who are experts and industry leaders with a finger on the pulse of the real estate market. In addition, there is a considerable amount of openness to embrace change—even change that produces pain points in the present to realize benefits in the not-too-distant future. The right mixture of organizational leadership and industry knowledge and experience provides the perfect balance needed to traverse the waters of change and plan ahead with confidence.

What is the most important personality trait you possess that enables you to transition to new board members each year?

I would say being conscientious and open-minded. I welcome the influx of exciting ideas new leadership brings to the table each year. Plus, my belief in being prepared ahead of time allows for quick and agile decision making in the face of real estate’s forever-changing technologies, market expansion and contraction, and rules and regulations. 

With your hectic schedule, how do you relieve stress and spend your downtime?

A year ago, I set out to pursue a doctoral degree in organizational leadership and development. Although much of my free time is spent advancing my education, I love spending as much time as I can with my wife, Jennifer, and our family and friends. I also enjoy playing the piano, writing, exercising, and developing new ideas for products and processes that hopefully one day will help make some of the things we do every day easier and more meaningful.
