The Growth Engine: Value Propositions and Association Resilience

Most associations can tell you their mission. Very few can tell you what actually sets them apart—and the data shows exactly what that costs them.

New association growth strategy benchmarking research reveals two important realities: Unique value propositions (UVPs) have a profound correlation to association resilience and confidence, yet surprisingly few associations have implemented this critical strategic tool.

Value Propositions Are Linked to Association Growth

Halmyre undertook growth strategy benchmarking research with North American professional and trade associations in early 2026. One of the most compelling emerging datapoints is the power of a unique value proposition to support growth and resilience.

These three common characteristics emerged for associations with UVPs.

They’re far more likely to be in growth mode.
Among associations with an approved UVP, 67 percent reported membership growth over the past five years. Notably, 50 percent of these associations experienced significant growth (greater than 10 percent of total membership). In comparison, only 33 percent of associations without a UVP reported growth.

They’re significantly more confident in their pricing strategies.
Of those with a UVP, 25 percent reported being “very confident” that their pricing aligns with their value, compared to a stunning zero percent of respondents without a value proposition. Of those with a UVP, only 16 percent reported a lack of confidence in their alignment between pricing and value.

They’re better positioned to innovate. Half of associations with an approved UVP reported that their boards are ready and willing to take innovative approaches. In contrast, 80 percent of respondents who reported having conservative, change-averse boards did not have a UVP, and had no plans to develop one.

There is a chicken-and-egg component to the data: Are growth-oriented associations more likely to have a UVP, or does the UVP drive growth? However, there is an indisputable link between clarity and alignment on your association’s value and your ability to grow.

Another standout finding from the research was how rare value propositions are: Only 27 percent of respondents reported having an approved value proposition. With data points throughout the research documenting the tremendous impact of a UVP, it serves as a wake-up call for the majority of associations.

The Existential Proof Test

Value propositions are about resilience—providing services and benefits that meet a real need today and into the future. Here’s the stress test for your association’s resilience: ask, "If we didn't exist tomorrow, what would happen?" If the answer is that you’d be re-created but you’d look or function differently than you do today, then you have the foundations for a value proposition, but you have a resiliency issue.

Three Critical Tactics to Build Association Resilience

Understand the size and focus of your marketplace.
As the needs of professions and professionals evolve, so must associations. Growth comes from understanding your total market and what it requires. Market research should step outside the boundaries of your current membership to ask: How big is our market? Who is in our market? Who are our members of tomorrow? Who are our competitors, and what are they offering?

Conduct research to capture the voice of your nonmember.
Too many associations function like comfortable clubs, setting their priorities, products and services based on input from their current membership and board. These associations must burst the “bubble” of insular thinking. Growth comes from truly understanding and addressing the needs of your entire marketplace, including lapsed or never-members, new entrants into your field, and more. They will challenge you to grow.

Price and position your products effectively within the marketplace.
With a research-informed perspective on your entire market and its needs, wants, and priorities, you have the data and perspectives to price and package your membership products appropriately for the future.

Pricing and membership packaging are too often overlooked as a tool to signal your unique value to prospective members. Invest in it and get intelligent pricing to work for your growth.

Resiliency for the Future

It’s unusual to encounter an association without a mission or vision statement. However, clearly articulated UVPs remain relatively rare. Given their link to resilience and growth, this is a call to action for all associations to ensure they have one and that it has been proof-tested against the day-to-day realities faced by their members and future members.

Associations have the power to change the world—or even just their members’ lives—for the better. Clearly articulating your unique value proposition ensures that both members and society understand your impact, and it puts you on a path for growth.
