Hire employees who think strategically, like to solve problems, and want to be part of something special. Then arm them with the skills and tools they need to be successful. By providing the resources they need, you're empowering them to do the best job possible. Also, one of my cardinal rules is to make sure staff members work in an environment that makes them want to excel and prosper. When they succeed, the organization succeeds.
Set clear direction, but be flexible.
While following a strategic plan is a key part of our success, we also must be able to respond rapidly to change so we don't find ourselves on the outside looking in. That's why ASRT takes an agile approach with our software development and infrastructure. Rolling with the punches helps us stay ahead of the curve and deliver the level of service our members expect.
Everyone's opinion matters.
As leaders, we need to check our egos at the door. Sometimes the best solutions come from unexpected places. One of my software engineers once told me, "Don't tell me how to solve the problem. Tell me what the problem is, and I'll give you the best options to overcome it." It's a good reminder to give staff the ability to voice their opinions and try new things. If a mistake is made along the way, we learn from it.
