According to the Urban Institute, in 2009, 26.8 percent of the U.S. adult population volunteered for a nonprofit. The amount of volunteer time given over the course of the year—and its equivalent in full-time employees and salary dollars—adds up:
- Total number of volunteers: 63,361,000
- Total hours volunteered: 14,963,262,000
- Average hours per volunteer: 233
- Median hours per volunteer: 50
- Equivalent in full-time employees: 8,802,000
- Equivalent in average private wages: $278 billion
