The poundage of e-waste created in 2011 in America alone, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Waste from electronics often contains harmful chemicals and metals that can leach into groundwater and add to crowded landfills. In response, many associations have teamed with convention centers and host meetings hotels to collect and recycle conference attendees' e-waste, particularly outdated cellphones and smartphones.
