Great article, Beth. I agree with Lori that many associations Zerista has provide conference mobile apps for have had a nice revenue stream through banner advertising on the smartphones.
We are also working with associations who are using mobile devices as exhibitor lead generation tools to get the most benefits from the expo portions of the shows.
It is an exciting time for events with mobile technology driving more connections for attendees, exhibitors, and organizers.

Very interesting piece. So far CASE is selling banner space on its conference app, and competition for that space is really heating up.

We are definitely seeing the same trend with our clients. Very high usage of event apps is leading sponsors to start asking for opportunities on the mobile conference app.
Wanted to add 2 other observations from our experience:
1) Selling exclusive sponsorship seems to be the best option for associations that are creating event apps for the first time before offering enhanced exhibitor listing and customized sponsorship package for the mobile app.
2) Put your members first (as you mentioned above) too much advertisement on the app will make the user experience terrible and will cheapen the app and eventually lowers the usage.
