Great to read this article. My wife is from Southern Pines, NC, in Moore County. I've been going down there for 25 years and certainly can see the growth of a healthy business community.

Ms.Sladek, I belong to a member association with an "us" vs "them" attitude. "They" just made major cuts to a unique benefit, saying "we" cannot afford it. The benefit, a world-class professional library, with no comparable library in America, cost only 1% of the total expense budget. It came to $12/member. Without asking, without planning, without valid justification, "they" railroaded a 60% cut in library staff, cut out book loans, locked out members, and are condensing the space to prepare space for what "they" consider most important on their agenda: non-dues revenue (from renting out the vacated space). IMHO, that library had major potential for recruitment/retention, but "they" didn't publicize it and many members knew little to nothing of it.
I look forward to hearing you speak at the ADA this week and hope you are able to work this subject into your talk.
