Regardless who wins the 2012 U.S. presidential election, smart associations will begin planning well in advance of Election Day on how they can work with and advise the transition teams of the new or returning administration.

We all know the famed motto of the Boy Scouts. Six months from Election Day, the same motto holds for how associations should approach a possible presidential transition: Be prepared. Despite months of campaigning on the horizon and an uncertain electoral outcome, there are numerous reasons for savvy associations to begin to prepare for the possibility of a transition. Whether President Obama is re-elected or his likely opponent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, prevails, the post-election period will be filled with opportunities for policy gains and losses....
