For years, Japanese associations have had very different structures than those in the United States. But now that their legal requirements have changed, Japanese associations are looking to shift how they think about membership, governance, and international outreach.

In October 2011, Japan AMC Co. Ltd., where I am a global account manager, held the first Association Management Seminar in Japan, which sold out only two days after tickets were made available. The venue was filled with CEOs and association board members who were excited to learn about association management.
