Seize every opportunity to build your network, and take more chances with projects and collaborations outside of your comfort zone. But always make sure that everything you do professionally supports your overall goal, which in my case is improving cancer care.

—Clifford A. Hudis, CEO, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Alexandria, Virginia

If my 25-year-old self would be available for advice, I would strongly urge him to take time to really listen. I have found when my ears are open and my mouth is shut, I have learned the most, which enables me to make some of the best decisions.

—Gregg B. Balko, FASAE, CAE, CEO, Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, Diamond Bar, California

Never doubt your abilities and stay true to yourself, not allowing other influences to get in the way of what you believe you can achieve. Remember, you are in control of who you are and wish to be. You have to apply yourself and realize that challenges will come from all types of circumstances. It is up to you to remain disciplined and determined to never give up. Remain positive and dedicate yourself until you reach your peak.

—Donna M. Andrews, CEO, Greater Providence Board of REALTORS, Providence, Rhode Island

Be patient. Learn to channel your enthusiasm and passion while taking the long view. Don’t worry too much about who gets the credit for the best ideas; instead, learn how to recognize the really good ones. Don’t be afraid to fail; that’s how you learn. And above all, your job has nothing to do with why the people who love you love you. They will love you no matter what.

—Andrea S. Rutledge, CAE, executive director, National Architectural Accrediting Board, Washington, DC
