IRS Exempt Organizations Division director shares her agency’s top priorities for the coming year.
In a meeting with ASAE, IRS Exempt Organizations Director Lois Lerner discussed her agency's work plan for fiscal year 2011 and its implications for associations and nonprofits. Lerner told ASAE that the agency will be looking into issues including political activity, inurement, and compliance with tax-exemption requirements by organizations that self-identify (some of which may be misinterpreting which section of the tax code they belong under).
Other ongoing projects in the division include a study on sources and uses of funds in the charitable sector and their relationship to the accomplishment of charitable purposes, examinations of colleges and universities focusing on unrelated business income, endowments, and executive compensation, and ongoing scrutiny of exempt organizations' governance practices and related controls.
