Nearly 15 Billion Hours Volunteered in United States in 2009

Data released by the Urban Institute shows the volume of volunteer work contributed by U.S. adults in 2009.

According to the Urban Institute, in 2009, 26.8 percent of the U.S. adult population volunteered for a nonprofit. The amount of volunteer time given over the course of the year—and its equivalent in full-time employees and salary dollars—adds up:

  • Total number of volunteers: 63,361,000
  • Total hours volunteered: 14,963,262,000
  • Average hours per volunteer: 233
  • Median hours per volunteer: 50
  • Equivalent in full-time employees: 8,802,000
  • Equivalent in average private wages: $278 billion
