Associations have the unique ability to enhance the personal and professional lives of individuals in virtually every business sector. Because associations are indispensable to industries, professions, and society, it's vitally important that people who work in associations have a full understanding of their nature and history.
This full-day course is part of ASAE's Association Management Week, a series of programs designed to build a strong understanding of the core functions of association management. Specifically designed for those who are new to the profession or have less than five years of experience in the field, Essential Practices in Association Management outlines associations’ basic organizational framework.
You’ll leave this course with a better understanding of how associations are organized, how the leadership and management functions work, the value of members, key principles for working with volunteers, and how your role contributes to the organization’s success.
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included.)
Module One: Association Management Foundation
Understand the importance of associations and review the roles that these organizations play within industries and professions and in society. Learn about different types of associations and the significance of an association’s mission, vision, and value statement.
Module Two: Governance and Volunteer Management
Explore association governance structure and the roles and relationships of the people involved in governance. Identify organizational units, classify the diverse forms of volunteer involvement, and learn about the volunteer management process.
Module Three: Membership Value
Discuss the value of membership. Identify traditional benefits, and explore findings and ideas uncovered in ASAE’s “Decision to Join” research
Module Four: Trends and Success Measures
Recognize external and internal trends and their impact on the association sector. Explore the commitment factors identified in the ASAE best-seller “7 Measures of Success,” and discover concrete steps that can be taken to improve organizational performance.

Cancellation, Refund & Substitution Policy
Submit all requests to ASAE Registration via email at [email protected]. All registration cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing by July 3, 2017, to receive a full refund, less a $75 administrative fee. Refunds cannot be approved for requests received after this date, to include no-shows. Substitutions are gladly accepted at any time. Badge sharing, splitting, and reprints are strictly prohibited.
Event Cancellation or Postponement
ASAE reserves exclusive right to modify, postpone/reschedule or cancel programs for any reason, including but not limited to emergency, inclement weather or other ‘acts of God’. If there is an event cancellation, every attempt will be made to reschedule, and registration fees will be applied to the rescheduled event date. Any travel, lodging, or incidental expenses incurred related to a cancelled event cannot be refunded under any circumstances. If a cancelled event cannot be rescheduled, ASAE will determine an equitable basis for the refund of a portion or all of the registration fees, after due consideration of circumstances and expenditures.
Consent to Use of Photographic Images
Registration and attendance at, or participation in, ASAE meetings and other activities constitutes an agreement by the registrant to the use and distribution of the registrant or attendees’ image or voice in photographs, videotapes, electronic reproductions and audiotapes of such events and activities by ASAE and other third parties, including but not limited the venue, the host city and the host CVB.
