Associations have the unique ability to enhance the personal and professional lives of individuals in virtually every business sector. Because associations are indispensable to industries, professions, and society, it's vitally important that people who work in associations have a full understanding of their nature and history.

This full-day course is part of ASAE's Association Management Week, a series of programs designed to build a strong understanding of the core functions of association management. Specifically designed for those who are new to the profession or have less than five years of experience in the field, Communication and Public Relations outlines the basic framework of public relations and communications for associations.

You’ll leave this course with a better understanding of how a polished presentation can enhance your professional image and the image of your organization, and how positive and smart relations with the media are critical to organizational success and reputation.

Consider taking all five Association Management Week courses to earn the Certificate in Association Management.

  • Agenda

    • Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Continental breakfast, lunch, and snacks are included.)

      Module One: Maintaining a Positive Image
      Understand the definition, importance, and role of public relations in association management, and differentiate the practice from its role in other organizations. Identify activities that share a connection with the practice of association public relations, and describe the four-phase model used in effective association public relation campaigns.

      Module Two: Communicating Your Message
      Identify association-specific audiences, and learn how to differentiate communications using a variety of channels. Explore techniques for interacting with the media—both proactively and reactively—and understand critical elements that associations should include in a crisis communication plan.

      Module Three: Listening Effectively
      Understand the importance of effective listening skills, and identify common barriers that inhibit effective listening. Outline the steps involved in successful listening, and explore techniques to improve listening skills.

      Module Four: Preparing and Delivering Presentations
      Outline an effective presentation structure, and learn guidelines for delivery. Identify common presenter mistakes and ways to avoid them. Explore presentation anxiety and how to overcome it.

      Mariama S. Boney, MSW, CAE

      Committed to maximizing results and growing initiatives, Mariama Boney, MSW, CAE, has been an administrator, executive, trainer, and consultant; serving in 3 associations, 5 institutions of higher education, and 2 non-profits over 20 years. Currently, she serves as the Senior Director, Volunteer Leadership Development and Regional Affairs with NAFSA. She is focused on applying strategic management and executive leadership to create and produce quality programs and services while developing caring and competent students, volunteer leaders, professionals, and boards. Mariama has served in several volunteer and leadership roles with ASAE. These include and are not limited to serving as a member and chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, member of the Power of A Awards Committee, member of the Gold Circle Awards Committee, a content leader during Annual Meeting and other conferences, plus content leader for several ASAE University programs during the CAE Kickoff and Association Management Week. She is blessed to be an alumnus of the ASAE Diversity Executive Leadership Program (2008-09). Originally from Syracuse, New York, Mariama obtained her B.S. and M.S. degree in Social Work from Syracuse University and the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation.

      Sheri L. Singer

      Sheri is passionate about helping associations solve their communications, marketing and public relations challenges. Both on staff and as a consultant, she has worked with more than 75 nonprofits conducting Gold Circle (and other) award-winning campaigns including the March of Dimes, American Society of Appraisers, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Snow & Ice Management Association, LiveStrong, the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association and more. Currently, she is the Vice Chair of ASAE's Healthcare Community Committee and was a member of ASAE's Communications Section Council. For five years, Sheri was on the board of the Public Relations Society of America National Capital Chapter as the liaison to the nonprofit/assoc. committee. She speaks and writes frequently on communications topics for ASAE, PRSA, IABC and others.

      Cancellation, Refund & Substitution Policy

      Submit all requests to ASAE Registration via email at [email protected] All registration cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing by July 12, 2018, to receive a full refund, less a $75 administrative fee. Refunds cannot be approved for requests received after this date, to include no-shows. Substitutions are gladly accepted at any time. Badge sharing, splitting, and reprints are strictly prohibited.

      Event Cancellation or Postponement

      ASAE reserves exclusive right to modify, postpone/reschedule or cancel programs for any reason, including but not limited to emergency, inclement weather or other ‘acts of God’. If there is an event cancellation, every attempt will be made to reschedule, and registration fees will be applied to the rescheduled event date. Any travel, lodging, or incidental expenses incurred related to a cancelled event cannot be refunded under any circumstances. If a cancelled event cannot be rescheduled, ASAE will determine an equitable basis for the refund of a portion or all of the registration fees, after due consideration of circumstances and expenditures.

      Consent to Use of Photographic Images

      Registration and attendance at, or participation in, ASAE meetings and other activities constitutes an agreement by the registrant to the use and distribution of the registrant or attendees’ image or voice in photographs, videotapes, electronic reproductions and audiotapes of such events and activities by ASAE and other third parties, including but not limited the venue, the host city and the host CVB.
