WASHINGTON—Betsy Piper/Bach is joining ASAE as President, ASAE Business Services, Inc. (ABSI) and Executive Vice President and COO, ASAE Insurance Company, on September 1. She will succeed Dixie Arthur, who retires on August 31.
“We are very excited to have Betsy join ASAE and ABSI. She’s been consulting for us on our Retirement Trust since January, and her work has been very impressive. She has experience in building and leading new products and services within institutional retirement plan programs, investment consulting organizations and trust and custody businesses. We’re looking forward to her contributions with ABSI,” said ASAE President & CEO John H. Graham, IV, FASAE, CAE.
Before joining ASAE, she was Senior Vice President, National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) and led its retirement and insurance services division, a for-profit subsidiary of NADA. She was responsible for developing and executing its strategic direction and leadership. Overseeing operational, investment, and fiduciary aspects of a $3B defined contribution business serving 1,800 plan sponsors and 67,000 participants as well as the NADA Life Insurance Trust.
From 2006 to 2009, she was President, Cardinal Trust and Investments, a $4B wealth management subsidiary of Cardinal Financial Corporation. As president, she had oversight responsibility of its Wealth Management Group, comprised of a broker/dealer, trust company and investment advisory subsidiaries.
Piper/Bach served as Senior Vice President and Chief Trust Officer of FBR National Trust, a subsidiary of the Freidman, Billings and Ramsey investment bank from 2001 – 2006. She transformed the company from a mutual fund structure to an institutional asset management and trust organization.

She currently serves as an Independent Director/ Financial Expert on the board of AdvisorShares. She is past Chair of ASAE Business Services, Inc. and board member since 2011. She is also past Chair of the Investment Management Consultants Association and board member for 12 years.
Piper/Bach is a member of several financial industry organizations including: Investment Management Consultants Association, Financial Planning Association, American Bankers Association, American Bar Association, and the Northern Virginia Estate Planners Council.
She is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), and Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA).
Piper Bach earned a Juris Doctorate from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, DC; a Masters of Education and Human Development from George Washington University, Washington, DC; and a Bachelor of Science from St. Cloud University, St. Cloud, MN.
She is the author of ERISA Plans: What Is Your Fiduciary Responsibility (2013) and Hidden Fees as a Source of Fiduciary Risk in Defined Contribution Plans (2008). She also is the recipient of the IMCA Richard J Davis Ethics Award (2009) for advancing the understanding and knowledge of investment management consulting and/or private wealth management in the area of ethics, and/or the fiduciary, legal, or regulatory issues that affect these professional practices.
