ASAE Announces 2016 Sentinel Association Political Leadership Awards

March 3, 2016

WASHINGTON—ASAE will present Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) with the 2016 Sentinel Award and Cheryl Ronk, CAE, CMP, FASAE, President of the Michigan Society of Association Executives, with ASAE’s Association Political Leadership Award. The awards will be presented during American Associations Day, March 9, at the ASAE Board Reception. American Associations Day is ASAE’s yearly fly-in to share the association industry’s powerful story with policymakers and their staffs in Washington, D.C.

Senator Heller is being honored for his critical support of federal employee attendance at association meetings along with his role in recognizing the need to delay the Cadillac tax for two years until 2020.

“We are proud to present Senator Heller with the Sentinel Award for his consistent defense of association meetings. As Senator Heller knows, it’s critical that government employees are free to attend mission-related association conferences where they can interact and share experiences and knowledge with their counterparts in the private sector. In addition, we are grateful for his work in achieving a successful two year delay of the Cadillac tax. The forty percent excise tax would have negatively impacted associations’ ability to provide good benefits,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, FASAE, CAE.

Ronk is being honored for her long-standing commitment to advocacy on behalf of associations. Since taking the helm of the Michigan Society of Association Executives over 27 years ago, she has promoted an appreciation and importance of advocacy among her members.

“Association work often goes unnoticed. Cheryl ensures that the Michigan Congressional Delegation is acutely aware of the issues impacting associations and the positive impact the association community has on the economy and society in Michigan. Associations train the workforce, facilitate commerce, create safety standards, and so much more. Thanks to Cheryl’s efforts, many more in Congress know that as well,” said Graham.

On March 10, hundreds of association professionals will take The Power of A message to the
Hill as part of American Associations Day. To find out more, visit The Power of A website.
