ASAE’s Springtime Expo, Association International Conferences Highlighted Need to Find Passion, Exploring Global Landscape

WASHINGTON—Last week, more than 3,200 association and meeting professionals gathered at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC to attend three key ASAE events: the Association International Conference, held May 14-16, the Springtime Expo, May 16, and ASAE Foundation’s Annual Springtime DC Golf & Tennis Invitational , May 17.

The Association International Conference had a total of 195 attendees. New this year, ASAE held a conference within a conference for attendees, and they held strategic discussions about how to grow an organization’s international presence, to enhance their current business model, and to assess new partnership opportunities. The session was led by Greg Balestrero, former CEO of the Project Management Institute.

The Springtime Expo’s total number of participants included 1,761 attendees and 1,496 exhibiting personnel who represented 377 companies, occupying 516 booths. The Buyer/Seller ratio is 54% buyers to 46% sellers.

Kicking off the 2013 Springtime Expo, keynote speaker Jim Ziolkowski, founder, president and CEO of buildOn as well as author of Walk in Their Shoes, told attendees about how he started buildOn because of the poverty he saw on a global level. It ignited a fire inside of him that he couldn’t put out. He urged attendees to find courage and confront their own fears, so they could become an igniter in their community.

“Association International Conference, Springtime Expo, and ASAE Foundation’s Annual Springtime DC Golf & Tennis Invitational are events that educate and enhance meeting professionals, association executives and attendees’ knowledge and skills, so they can take their organizations to the next level,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “Jim Ziolkowski’s message about igniting the fire inside of us is important because we need to find opportunities to make a difference in the global community.”

On Friday, the ASAE Foundation hosted its 31st Annual Springtime DC Golf & Tennis Invitational at Lansdowne Resort. The event doubled in size and added a spa day and winery tours this year with 320 total participants.

This year’s event was also a Certified Green Golf Tournament in Virginia. ASAE Foundation and Lansdowne Resort donated 250 reusable, biodegradable recycled plastic water bottles and Avis donated 100 reusable bottles for participants. At the Convene Green Alliance tables on the golf course, they hosted a trivia game with golfers and each correct answer resulted in a tree being planted in honor of the golfer or someone they designated in California. ASAE is working with American Forests to help replenish trees lost in California forest fires.

Next year’s dates for Association International Conference will be May 13-15, 2014, Springtime Expo is Thursday, May 15, and the Annual Springtime DC Invitational Golf and Tennis Tournament is Friday, May 16.
