WASHINGTON– On March 18, ASAE will present Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA) with its 2013 Sentinel Award in Washington, DC, for his leadership role last year in helping associations preserve a dialogue between government employees and the private sector at industry conferences.

The Sentinel Award presentation will take place during a reception at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill as part of ASAE’s annual Legislative Fly In, with ASAE’s Board of Directors and participants from American Associations Day in attendance.

As Co-Chair of the Congressional Travel & Tourism Caucus, Farr has a thorough understanding of the important role industry meetings have on local and national economies, and how meetings help create better public policy as well as educational opportunities for both industry and government employees.

“ASAE and the association community are honored to present Congressman Farr with this award for his leadership and his recognition of the importance of face-to-face meetings,” said ASAE President & CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “The congressman played a pivotal role last year in preventing severe restrictions on federal agencies’ participation in meetings from taking effect.”

Associations represent a major piece of the meetings and conventions industry in the United States. According to the Convention Industry Council, the meetings industry supports 1.7 million jobs and accounts for $263 billion in spending.

American Associations Day and the Sentinel Award presentation are part of ASAE’s Power of A Week, with events slated from March 13-19, in an effort to call attention to the association community’s contributions to America’s economy and to our quality of life.
