WASHINGTON — Last week, more than 3,500 association and meetings professionals gathered at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington to attend two key ASAE events: the Association International Conference, held May 1-3, and the Springtime Expo, May 2-4.

The Association International Conference had a 25 percent increase in attendance with a total of 220 attendees. New this year, ASAE created an International Pavilion in the Springtime Expo Hall where 39 exhibitors showcased their services and had the opportunity to raise awareness about international offerings

The Expo’s total number of participants included 1,845 attendees and 1,673 exhibitor personnel who represented 472 exhibiting companies, occupying 582 booths.

Kicking off the 2012 Springtime Expo, keynote speaker and author of “Flip,” Peter Sheahan challenged attendees to flip their thinking about their meetings and trade shows. He advised them to focus on changing or adding one new element that creates value for their meeting attendees rather than retooling an entire event, and to make this adjustment now rather than wait a few years.

“We always strive to enhance our members’ experience with each of our meetings. One of the many additions to this year’s show was moving the International Conference prior to Springtime and the creation of the International pavilion to help educate meeting professionals and attendees about the opportunities internationally. It was very successful, and we hope to continue to increase the number of exhibitors as well as attendees at next year’s event,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “Peter Sheahan’s message about taking an incremental risk when times are good was excellent, and I hope it spurred our members to think differently and consider his advice.”

On Thursday evening, over 600 meetings professionals, rising stars and some of the finest vendors in the hospitality industry continued their Springtime experience at the Springtime Unplugged networking event.

On Friday, the ASAE Foundation hosted its 30th Annual Springtime DC Invitational Golf and Tennis Tournament at Lansdowne Resort. The event more than doubled in size from last year with 156 golfers, 20 golf clinic participants, and 13 tennis clinic participants.

This year’s event was the first full-field Certified Green Golf Tournament in Virginia. During the event, ASAE and Lansdowne Resort used biodegradable cups and plates on the course, refrained from using plastic water bottles and provided all attendees with a reusable water bottle. These efforts resulted in an 85 percent landfill avoidance and recycling rate.

At the conclusion of ASAE’s Annual Springtime DC Invitational, ASAE Foundation presented a $250 check to CREATE Tennis, Inc., which is a non-profit entity in Washington that helps provide educational and a positive sports environment for youth.

Next year’s Springtime Expo will be Thursday, May 16, 2013 and the Annual Springtime DC Invitational Golf and Tennis Tournament will be Friday, May 17.
