New Association 990 Database Puts Detailed Benchmarking in Hands of Association Industry

WASHINGTON—The ASAE Foundation has recently launched a new database, Association 990—a powerful collection of benchmarking products based on information collected from the IRS Form 990. The database highlights organizations with membership dues of at least $200 and one paid staff member.

“The Association 990 is a powerful tool that will enable associations and other interested parties to access the most accurate information about the industry, and serve as a means for comparison and benchmarking of associations to other associations in the industry,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “Being populated with data supplied by the IRS, this database will further increase the credibility and validity of our research products and advance ASAE as the leader in association industry research.”

Association 990 is based on information from thousands of membership organizations, and will be updated monthly, allowing for immediate access to timely, accurate and relevant benchmarking data that build on already-useful resources, such as the ASAE Operating Ratio Report.

Using the database, the ASAE Foundation will generate a number of products, like the first one, called the Association 990 Key Ratios Interactive Tool—an online benchmarking product that provides the ability to sort the aggregated Association 990 database and generate three reports to benchmark key ratios, revenue and expenses, and balance sheet data against organizations similar in size, type and scope.

A single IRS Form 990 reveals significant insight into an organization’s exempt activities, fiscal health, and governance practices and structure, and provides detailed information on compensation, investments, and reserves.

Unlike other collections of exempt-organization tax submissions, the database powering Association 990 zeros in on membership organizations specifically and aggregates the data, allowing for filtering that results in meaningful performance ratios of membership organizations.

“The ASAE Foundation has made a significant investment for association and nonprofit leaders to advance their organizations. It will continue to do so to maintain and refresh Association 990 on a monthly basis with the latest available data so that tools such as Association 990 Key Ratios Interactive Tool and Association 990 Agenda Items are available and up to date,” added Graham.

More information about Association 990, demos, sample reports and pricing information, is available here.
