The new immigration laws that have recently been passed in several U.S. states and under consideration in others continue to fuel a national debate over the specific provisions of the measure and whether comprehensive immigration reform is best addressed at the state or national level. ASAE is not taking a position on the laws. However, it is unfortunate that the meetings and tourism industry, associations and other organizations and the people who are a part of these communities may be negatively impacted by potential outcomes.

The Senate today voted to repeal the expanded 1099 reporting requirements that were unpopular with many associations and small businesses, sending the bill to the president’s desk for signature. ASAE and its grassroots supporters have been pushing strongly for repeal since last summer, and made the issue the top legislative concern for American Associations Day 2011, ASAE’s legislative fly-in held in Washington, DC last week.

In conjunction with the 2011 American Associations Day, the ASAE Board of Directors met yesterday to discuss key projects and initiatives. Based on the discussion at the last Board meeting at the 2010 Volunteer Leadership Retreat in New Orleans, November 15-17, the ASAE Board heard recommendations on various ongoing projects. The agenda included a detailed update on the International initiative, volunteer structure and experience of ASAE’s 1,000-strong volunteer force, enhancements to ASAE’s Annual Meeting and Exposition, and a new designation for ASAE Fellows.

The Convention Industry Council today released a new study: The Economic Significance of Meetings to the U.S. Economy, revealing that the U.S. meetings industry directly supports 1.7 million jobs, a $106 billion contribution to GDP, $263 billion in spending, $60 billion in labor revenue, $14.3 billion in federal tax revenue and $11.3 billion in state and local tax revenue.

ASAE is seeking association professionals and industry partners to fill open positions on the ASAE and the ASAE Foundation Board of Directors to help lead the association dedicated to furthering the profession of association management. In this annual call for nominations, there are six open positions: Secretary-Treasurer and five Directors (four At Large and one Industry Partner). All directors selected will serve on the ASAE Board and three of the five selected will also serve on the ASAE Foundation Board.
