Global Growth Strategies — Available August 7th!

The first phase of ASAE’s Global Management Series, culminating with the report Achieving Global Growth: Establishing & Maintaining Global Markets, examined the practices of associations growing globally, but it left a number of questions unanswered. How do associations build strategies around these practices? What are the potential roadblocks? What’s required in terms of research, governance, and member relations, and what other factors are important to successful global growth?
Global Growth Strategies summarizes the answers we received when we put those questions to a diverse group of association leaders. In this report, you’ll learn about the key steps to take and the important partnerships to make to succeed in international markets. Global Growth Strategies provides valuable considerations for associations establishing operations in foreign markets and for associations looking to take that step.
This report also includes the "Special Focus on China," which examines the strategies and operations of associations working in that country. This special examination was crafted from interviews with 40 association leaders, translating the themes of those interviews into actionable advice on a variety of topics, including strategic planning, operational decisions, and cultural issues.
This report on global strategy represents the second year of an ongoing effort to provide a common roadmap for associations as they plan, execute, or refine their global efforts. The ASAE Foundation and MCI Group, a global network of 62 offices in 32 countries providing market development services and conference management, joined forces to study processes and strategies of how associations are operating globally. MCI provided partial funding to support the research and participated with ASAE staff in developing the research plan, interpreting research findings, and preparing reports. MCI also served in an advisory capacity on the overall multi-year research initiative, along with the Global Management Series Advisory Group.

Achieving Global Growth: Establishing & Maintaining Global Markets is the first report from ASAE Foundation’s new series of research on global strategy and operations. This initial report outlines the factors and strategies that set growers — associations who are experiencing international membership and revenue growth — apart from those who have experienced stagnation or decline. Designed to inform associations considering international expansion as well as those already operating internationally, Achieving Global Growth identifies key factors for success. Several of these points are highlighted in the infographic below.

This report marks the completion of the first phase of ASAE Foundation’s multi-year research initiative, the Association Global Management Series, to examine strategies associations employ to develop and sustain global growth outside their US market. The goal of the project is to provide the association community with the tools and resources needed to effectively explore and cultivate business ventures in emerging markets around the world. The next phase of the research builds on the initial report to examine strategies and define best practices utilized by international grower associations.
