Former ABC 7 News Anchor Kathleen Matthews To Speak On Strategic Career Development At “In Honor of Women” WASHINGTON, DC— Kathleen Matthews, executive vice president, global communications and public affairs, Marriott Intl., and former news anchor of Washington’s WJLA ABC7 will be the keynote speaker at “In Honor of Women,” November 7 at the JW Marriott. Part of a vast line-up of educational programs offered through ASAE & The Center’s Greater Washington Network, “In Honor of Women” will bring together close to 200 local association professionals and industry partners for an intimate discussion of issues affecting women’s professional advancement. Educational sessions will focus on skills development in leadership, public speaking, negotiating and mentoring, and recipients of the Greater Washington Network’s 2007 Women Who Advance Excellence in Associations awards will be recognized as well. “Kathleen Matthews is no stranger to wearing many hats just as those of us in the association community experience. While coming into our homes to tell us the important news of the day, she too had to balance the personal needs of a busy family with her own professional interests in career advancement. Her perseverance in both areas has helped bring once little-known women’s issues to the national stage, and in doing so, she has proven it is possible for women to break though the seemingly unbreakable ‘glass ceiling,’” said Susan Sarfati, CAE, president & CEO, The Center for Association Leadership and executive vice president, ASAE. “Having covered the news in this town for close to 30 years, she undoubtedly has tremendous experiences that women of associations – and any profession for that matter – can benefit from, and we look forward to listening and learning from her.” Prior to joining Marriott in 2006, Matthews led a distinguished career in journalism as anchor, reporter, producer and host of WJLA’s daily newscasts and signature programs Capital Sunday and Working Woman - a nationally syndicated TV news magazine show focusing on issues impacting women in the professional setting. Highly-regarded throughout her 30 years in the news industry, Matthews is an Edward R. Murrow and nine-time Emmy award winner, with additional honors including the prestigious Associated Press, George Foster Peabody, David Brinkley, Women in Communications and the American Women in Radio & Television’s Gracie Allen awards. A graduate of Stanford University, Matthews received a teaching fellowship at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics in 2004 and was named “Washingtonian of the Year” in 2001.
