Postcards From a New CEO

ASSOCIATIONS NOW, December 2008 , Intelligence

By: Jamie Notter
Summary:
Have you ever wondered what it was like in the rarefied atmosphere of the CEO suite? Jamie Notter, vice president of organizational effectiveness at Management Solutions Plus, recently made the trip and became CEO of an association for the first time. He'll be sharing his insights from his first year as a CEO through a series of postcards to Associations Now readers.

Greetings from CEOLand!

OK, I did my homework. I read the guidebooks and even the online reviews written by travelers in CEOLand, but no matter how you prepare, you really don't know what it's like until you get there. It's funny. I had been thinking about this trip for so long, I half expected some kind of parade when I got here, with everyone showing up to say, "Congratulations, Jamie! Welcome to CEOLand!" But that's not how it works. You just show up. As big a shift as it is for me, it's not much more than a blip on the radar screen of the locals. I now have a much better sense of the phrase "hit the ground running."

There's nothing like going into a foreign land to help you understand the power of stereotype. The locals in Membertown instantly gave me the title of "foreigner" (and all the behavioral expectations that go with that title). While I am certainly different, I am also part of their community now, and just because I am different from them, that doesn't mean they really know who I am or what I bring with me. At several meetings they did not expect me to speak up (but I did). I was specifically invited here to change the way they do things, but some of the committees don't seem to be aware of that! It has been important for me to gently push back against some expectations and be more vocal about asserting my own needs, approaches, and expectations. I sense it's not the cultural norm to tackle these things directly, but I find it so much more productive in the long term when you do.

This place is nothing if not entertaining! I'm definitely on my toes.
Jamie

Jamie's a phenomenal writer in general, so I knew this would be cool, but I had to chime in that I really love the concept of the postcard from another land (so to speak) - what a wonderful metaphor that everyone can relate to.

Like reading what's been inside my mind ... as an AMC we're brought in largely by small chapter organizations to "change the way they do things" only to find out now all are on board. Jamie's right on about "gently pushing." Looking forward to more postcards. (PS the format gives me ideas to use in our own associations too - so read for content and concept.)

While not a CEO and never having the opportunity to experience what Jamie is experiencing, I think this exercise is extremely valuable for those who aspire to a C-level title. Rarely do you have the chance to gain insight almost real-time and learn from such a knowledgeable and thoughtful individual. I liken this exercise to a type of virtual mentorship and see a lot of value in learning from folks as they learn, grow, succeed and fail. I'd highly recommend keeping an eye on this series because if it is done like everything else Jamie does there will be a lot of wisdom and insight that will benefit all who take time to read and truly synthesize the experiences he is sharing.
