Hiring an Association Management Company

An association management company (AMC) is a professional service company that specializes in providing management services for associations on a fee-for-service basis.  AMCs provide the professional staff, administrative support, office space, technology, and equipment an association needs to operate efficiently.  An association management company typically manages several associations from one company location, providing a wide range of benefits including shared technology systems, access to expert specialized staff, and shared purchasing power. 

The association management company industry is more than 110 years old.  Today, there are over 600 AMCs worldwide that collectively manage associations ranging in budget size from $50,000 to $16 million and representing more than 3 million members.  Regardless of the size, industry, and membership type of your association, there is likely an AMC that has experience with an organization like yours.

ASAE’s Association Management Company Accreditation may prove valuable in your selection of an association management company.  To earn Accreditation, a company must document that it meets or exceeds standards and criteria deemed essential the protection of the interests of your association and effective association management service. 

In addition to ASAE's AMC Accreditation, AMC Institute (the trade association for association management companies, www.amcinstitute.org) has maintained a separate Accreditation program for several years.   Each Accreditation program separately designates firms that meet the quality standards for its specific program.  In response to feedback from AMC consumers and the AMC community, discussions began several years ago to move to a single industry accreditation.  Most recently, a panel of ASAE & The Center’s AMC community leaders was convened, and after thorough consideration, recommended a single industry accreditation program administered by AMC Institute based upon their American National Standards (ANSI) approved standard for good AMC practices.  The transition to a single a program has already begun, and will be completed by the end of 2010.  For more information on AMC Institute and its Accreditation program, please visit www.amcinstitute.org/accreditation
