What's the great idea? Train volunteers online using on-demand webinars and presentations. Who's doing it? The 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. What's involved? Special Olympics received a one-year grant from the for-profit company Brainshark, which helped the organization train more than 5,000 volunteers online through on-demand presentations. Instead of several training sessions a week in classrooms, volunteers trained for the World Winter Games in their homes. Volunteers registered on the Special Olympics World Winter Games website and then went through the training at their pace, when they were available. What are people saying? "We've had people say that the online training made them more inspired and excited to be a part of the games," says Heather Hill, vice president of marketing for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. Hill also says that Brainshark completely changed the training process and made it easier on volunteers and staff. "It made it that much easier for volunteers to make the commitment, and it helped us push through the training process much quicker than we could have if we were doing the training in person," Hill says. Last year's training was in person and consisted of weekend and evening sessions. "It was a very labor-intensive process, not only planning for the setup and having the space ready and the staff on hand to manage that training, but also in getting several thousand volunteers here over the course of six days." This year, says Hill, "it was as easy as uploading our training presentation and having that accessible through our online registration process."
