The new immigration laws that have recently been passed in several U.S. states and under consideration in others continue to fuel a national debate over the specific provisions of the measure and whether comprehensive immigration reform is best addressed at the state or national level. ASAE is not taking a position on the laws. However, it is unfortunate that the meetings and tourism industry, associations and other organizations and the people who are a part of these communities may be negatively impacted by potential outcomes.

The Senate today voted to repeal the expanded 1099 reporting requirements that were unpopular with many associations and small businesses, sending the bill to the president’s desk for signature. ASAE and its grassroots supporters have been pushing strongly for repeal since last summer, and made the issue the top legislative concern for American Associations Day 2011, ASAE’s legislative fly-in held in Washington, DC last week.

Based on the discussion at the last Board meeting at the 2010 Volunteer Leadership Retreat in New Orleans, November 15-17, the ASAE Board heard recommendations on various ongoing projects. The Convention Industry Council today released a new study: The Economic Significance of Meetings to the U.S. Economy, revealing that the U.S. meetings industry directly supports 1.7 million jobs, a $106 billion contribution to GDP, $263 billion in spending, $60 billion in labor revenue, $14.3 billion in federal tax revenue and $11.3 billion in state and local tax revenue.

This year’s attendance has seen an increase in the number of association professionals by nearly 700, and exhibitors by nearly 100.

A discussion on ASAE’s program of work topped the agenda at the Board meeting Friday preceding ASAE’s 2010 Annual Meeting and Exposition, August 21-24, in Los Angeles. During the day-long meeting at the JW Marriott in downtown LA, the Board received a progress report on the organization’s initiatives in three segments: an overview of ASAE’s ongoing initiatives, a detailed summary of three ongoing programs with new growth opportunities—The Power of A, Greater Washington region and Digital Strategy—and a report on progress on an approach to serve the specific needs of four business segments, originally presented at the March Board meeting. The Board approved a program of work and related budget for Fiscal Year 2010 (FY11).

The new ASAE Foundation is quickly taking shape and will be ready to launch its work at ASAE’s 2010 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Los Angeles, August 21-24. At a joint meeting March 2010, the ASAE and The Center for Association Leadership Board approved the creation of the Foundation, along with a name change for the organization and expanded use of The Power of A (Associations) campaign. The organization’s name became ASAE, with a tag line “The Center for Association Leadership.” The Board’s decision to create a distinct 501(c)(3) foundation, separate from the ASAE 501(c)(6) organization but clearly linked, provides a substantive fundraising platform and message for the community.

ASAE Chairman Velma Hart yesterday was honored with the 2010 APEX Award for Distinguished Service. Presented by Black Meetings & Tourism magazine, the Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions, which have positively impacted travel and tourism. The Award was presented at the Travel Professionals of Color (TPOC) 8th Annual Conference, April 22. Hart is the first African American chairman of the ASAE Board.

The Convention Industry Council (CIC) today issued a comprehensive survey to meeting planners which will develop data necessary to determine the economic significance that meetings represent and to produce a basis for ongoing benchmarking and analysis of the meetings sector. The study is being conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the survey is being sent to planner members of CIC’s member organizations.

Following a two-day meeting in conjunction with the 2010 American Associations Day, ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership Boards today approved a name change for the organization. Based on a recommendation from a task force appointed by The Center Board, the organization’s name will become ASAE, with a tag line “The Center for Association Leadership.” In addition, the current 501(c)3 entity will become the ASAE Foundation, with a tag line “Advancing Association and Nonprofit Leadership,” to support the organization’s mission in the areas of research, leadership and innovation.

The Certified Association Executive (CAE) program has recently been granted accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The CAE is the professional certification for executive staff at nonprofit organizations such as trade associations, professional societies, philanthropic organizations and individual membership organizations, and also includes staff of association management companies.

As White House and Senate leaders are negotiating the content of the final health care reform bill, ASAE, along with Independent Sector and other nonprofit organizations, has been working to ensure the final product contains the Senate language on subsidies for small employers. ASAE President and CEO John H. To the relief of the association and business communities, the House of Representatives passed legislation today maintaining the “established business relationship” exception that allows associations and companies to send unsolicited faxes to their members and clients. Following similar action by the Senate late last week, the bill (S. 714) is now ready for the president’s signature. President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law before Friday, July 1.

The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) has announced it will honor Robert J. Dolibois, CAE, executive vice president of American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA), with its 2005 Key Award, and Anetha W. Grant, senior vice president of sales of Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau, with its 2005 Academy of Leaders Award. Both awards will be formally presented in ceremonies during the 2005 ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership Annual Meeting and Exposition August 13-16 in Nashville, TN.

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Meeting Professionals International (MPI), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and Society of Incentive & Travel Executives (SITE) are urging Members of the U.S. Congress to support legislation (H.R. 2628) extending the deadline by one year for countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) to begin issuing passports that include biometric data identifying the passport holder.

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Joint Leadership Committee has announced nominees for ASAE's Executive Committee and Board of Directors for 2005-2006. Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Alexandria, VA, will be sworn in as ASAE's 2005-2006 chairman during the ASAE Annual Meeting in Nashville August 13-16, 2005. Maehara will succeed Thomas R. Kuhn, CAE, president, Edison Electric Institute, Washington, DC, who will remain on the ASAE Executive Committee for one year as immediate past chairman.

WASHINGTON, DC - The membership of the Northern California Society of Association Executives (NCSAE) has voted as of May 18 to legally dissolve as a corporation and create a new NCSAE Network, to be managed by the Washington, DC-based American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
