The new site, 199Ideas.org, was created based on the book series 199 Ideas, published by ASAE’s Association Management Press, which features hundreds of ideas about various topics of association and nonprofit management.

The new immigration laws that have recently been passed in several U.S. states and under consideration in others continue to fuel a national debate over the specific provisions of the measure and whether comprehensive immigration reform is best addressed at the state or national level. ASAE is not taking a position on the laws. However, it is unfortunate that the meetings and tourism industry, associations and other organizations and the people who are a part of these communities may be negatively impacted by potential outcomes.

The African Association Management Study Mission includes education sessions on various topics of association management, as well as in-person visits with representatives from leading U.S. associations.

The Senate today voted to repeal the expanded 1099 reporting requirements that were unpopular with many associations and small businesses, sending the bill to the president’s desk for signature. ASAE and its grassroots supporters have been pushing strongly for repeal since last summer, and made the issue the top legislative concern for American Associations Day 2011, ASAE’s legislative fly-in held in Washington, DC last week.

In conjunction with the 2011 American Associations Day, the ASAE Board of Directors met yesterday to discuss key projects and initiatives. Based on the discussion at the last Board meeting at the 2010 Volunteer Leadership Retreat in New Orleans, November 15-17, the ASAE Board heard recommendations on various ongoing projects. The agenda included a detailed update on the International initiative, volunteer structure and experience of ASAE’s 1,000-strong volunteer force, enhancements to ASAE’s Annual Meeting and Exposition, and a new designation for ASAE Fellows.

This year’s attendance has seen an increase in the number of association professionals by nearly 700, and exhibitors by nearly 100.

During the day-long meeting at the JW Marriott in downtown LA, the Board received a progress report on the organization’s initiatives in three segments: an overview of ASAE’s ongoing initiatives, a detailed summary of three ongoing programs with new growth opportunities—The Power of A, Greater Washington region and Digital Strategy—and a report on progress on an approach to serve the specific needs of four business segments, originally presented at the March Board meeting. The Board approved a program of work and related budget for Fiscal Year 2010 (FY11).

Washington Convention Center during the largest one-day meeting in the hospitality industry, held May 27. The Convention Industry Council (CIC) today issued a comprehensive survey to meeting planners which will develop data necessary to determine the economic significance that meetings represent and to produce a basis for ongoing benchmarking and analysis of the meetings sector. The study is being conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the survey is being sent to planner members of CIC’s member organizations.

Following a two-day meeting in conjunction with the 2010 American Associations Day, ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership Boards today approved a name change for the organization. ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE has recently sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking them to include the Senate language in the final health care bill. ASAE shared this letter with the House and Senate Democratic leadership.

Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, ASAE & The Center employees will complete a number of renovation projects including painting, landscaping, creating artwork, constructing a state-of-the-art Computer Lab, and mentoring students.

Based on an outpouring of concern from the District of Columbia’s nonprofit community, DC Councilmember Phil Mendelson has tabled his bill revising the city’s Nonprofit Corporation Act until next year, allowing for a more deliberative rewrite and quelling concerns from ASAE and others over the ambiguity in the legislation.

The Nonprofit Pilot offers nonprofits and associations who have received recognition through state-based quality programs the opportunity to become acclimated to the program and receive feedback from a private-sector team of examiners. All nonprofits and associations can begin to use the Baldrige Criteria to drive organizational self-improvement.

Speaking on the theme “Leading Associations in an Extreme World,” Woodruff will address the forces shaping today’s world - unprecedented security issues, global economics, the Iraq war as well as domestic issues including the next election and Supreme Court nominees.

Seventy-two association executives earned their Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) during the last exam period, joining more than 3,100 industry leaders worldwide. To the relief of the association and business communities, the House of Representatives passed legislation today maintaining the “established business relationship” exception that allows associations and companies to send unsolicited faxes to their members and clients. Following similar action by the Senate late last week, the bill (S. 714) is now ready for the president’s signature. President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law before Friday, July 1.

Known for hits such as, “Bad Girls,” “Last Dance,” and “She Works Hard for the Money,” Summer will close out an evening highlighting the tastes and sounds of “Music City USA” with some of the all stars of classic rock. Additionally, top country recording artists and Nashville neighbors LeAnn Rimes and Phil Vassar will give association executives a preview of their forthcoming fall tour when they perform on August 16 during the Grand Finale Concert.

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Meeting Professionals International (MPI), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and Society of Incentive & Travel Executives (SITE) are urging Members of the U.S. Congress to support legislation (H.R. 2628) extending the deadline by one year for countries in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) to begin issuing passports that include biometric data identifying the passport holder.
