ASAE Board Approves New D&I Resource, Program of Work for FY13, Association Lobbyist Guideline Revisions

August 11, 2012

WASHINGTON—Prior to the official opening of the 2012 Annual Meeting and Exposition, August 11-14, in Dallas, the ASAE Board approved a new Diversity & Inclusion case statement for associations, the plan of work and related budget for Fiscal Year 2013 that includes continued support and development of the Power of A campaign, and revisions to Association Lobbyist guidelines.

The new Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) case statement was developed by the 2012 D&I Committee as a resource to help any association get started in its D&I commitment. It includes a glossary of terms and proven reasons why associations start and maintain D&I action and revenue streams. To see a copy of the statement, please visit www.asaecenter.org/diversity.

The Board approved the plan of work and related budget for Fiscal Year 2013, and it includes projects relating to Global Activities, the Power of A Campaign, Innovation and New Product Development, and digital and social media strategies. The Board is committed to increasing awareness about The Power of A and continued activity to protect the interests of associations.

“Our community looks to ASAE as an incubator for innovation, as being the political voice for our members, and as leading the way to encourage our colleagues to grow their practices in diversity and inclusion excellence. These new initiatives are game changers for our organization and industry,” said ASAE Chairman Peter J. O'Neil, FASAE, CAE, who is executive director of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

In addition, the Board approved new lobbying guidelines developed by the Public Policy Committee and Government Relations Section Council taskforce. These include a new definition of “association lobbyist,” which now comprises in-house employees and contract lobbyists hired by an association, and more concise language in support of policy process, compliance, policy process, and conflict of interest. The guidelines were last updated in 2005.

“The efforts discussed during the board meeting illustrate the great value that members and volunteers give to and receive from our community. ASAE is committed to developing sound strategies and solutions that will affect our members today and in the future,” said Joseph M. McGuire CAE, president of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers in Washington, DC, who will become Chairman of the ASAE Board.

The outgoing chairman of ASAE, Peter J. O’Neil, FASAE, CAE, the incoming chairman of ASAE Joseph M. McGuire, CAE, and ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE, are available for interviews.
